HISTORY

The family originated in Mt. Gilead, North Carolina. In 1797 Mr. William Scarborough received a grant for most of the land where the town of Mt. Gilead is located.

Among the early pioneers in this county were William Scarborough, W. B. Igram Solomon Ballard, Richmond Bruton, L. G. Barringer, C.W. Wooley, Congressman Edmond DeBerry, James Lilly, Pleasant Grazier, John Dunn, Redden Galloway, Isham Williams, Calvin Cook, John A. Letdderberter, John Andrews, John McAulay, Aulay McAulay and many others whose descendants lived and work here now.

In the ealy 1800s Mt. Gilead or Providence, as it was called then, was no more than a country crossroad. There are two dates, 1790 & 1820, in reference I have come across as to when the first Methodist Church was founded that was located where the Charles Dorsett Home now stands. In 1855, this congregation put up a frame building near where the lovely church, built in 1910 on the corner of North Main Street, is now located.

The Stanback Family Reunion Committee was formed in 1994 when two large Stanback family bodies, Knight-Stanback of Winston-Salem, NC and Little-Stanback of Montgomery County, NC, joined together.  The Committee embraces all relatives and friends of the Stanback family whose African-American roots are in North Carolina.

PURPOSE

The Stanback Family Reunion, organized in 1954, continues today as a testimonial to the love, strength, and endurance of a family. The annual reunion, which takes place the last weekend in August, is attended by more than 200 people. It provides an opportunity to celebrate our kinship - to share our joys, sorrows, accomplishments, and dreams.

The Stanback Family Runion Committee was formed in 1994 when two large Stanback family bodies joined together. The committee enbraces all relatives and friends of the Stanback family whose African-American roots are in North Carolina.

OUR GOAL

The reunion provides an opportunity to share our joys and sorrows, triumphs and tragedies, accomplishments, dreams, and blessings.
